Sangha Sangha Night

The Triratna Buddhist community has for many years been involved with the Dalit community. What used to be called the untouchables, those people outside the traditional Hindu caste system. Considered “impure”, and therefore “untouchable”, they are often restricted to unsafe and exploitative work, such as cleaning out public toilet pits or working in toxic brick-making factories.

Despite the illegality of this so-called “untouchability”, those who are discriminated against on the basis of caste are routinely denied access to education, food and basic rights. This system of graded inequality has existed for centuries, widening the ever-growing poverty gap and social and economic progress of millions in South Asia.

The Karuna Trust is a Triratna based charity that helps to raise money and awareness for those in the Dalit community in India and Southeast Asia and works by setting up grassroots led projects in areas such as education, sustainable livelihood and gender equality.

This week at Sangha night we will be having an evening dedicated to the work of Karuna. Nealey who works for Karuna will be coming to tell us about the work and about the fundraising that takes place. Fi Murray, who many of you will know from our own Bristol Sangha, has recently done an appeal for Karuna and will also be coming to share her experience with us.

These appeals are open to people within the Triratna community to become involved with, becoming part of a residential community that works in a particular location to fundraise. Having done one of the appeals myself, I can say that they are potentially life changing experiences, as it was for me.

Arrive from 7:15pm for a 7:30pm start.

For those who have completed an intro course at any time.

Please do give for the classes and events you attend. Every financial gift is appreciated, and it is with your generosity that our centre is here and thriving.
