Our theme for this year is ‘Be the Revolution’! What does this mean? Is it possible to be a Buddhist and a revolutionary? What what revolution look like from a Buddhist perspective? What can we actually do to bring about a revolution? Is this revolution an internal revolution or a revolution within society?
Bhadra, Naravira and Esme will be meeting in conversation to more...

Bristol Young Buddhists - Dangers of Literalism
The Dangers of LiteralismStop taking everything so literally!
So much of how we speak, our vision of things and our communication is metaphorical and expressing something beyond the words themselves. Words and images are like a finger pointing at the moon. You’re not meant to be looking at the finger.
Imagination is key to the spiritual path and if we take dharma texts (the Buddha’s teachings) too literally in the wrong context / situation we can get more...

Going Deeper in Meditation | Metta to Experience
There are so many possibilities for practising metta meditation. In this session we’ll explore bringing metta to ‘phenomena’: all of our experience, as it unfolds through the six senses. The invitation will be to hold that experience with kindness, tenderness, care, interest, sensitivity and acceptance – and see how this attitude of metta then colours our world. We’ll continue this exploration in the February Going Deeper (though each session will also more...

Sangha Night - Practice Evening
We will be meeting on Sangha Night this week to practice together.
From the results of our survey last year, one aspect that many of you asked to see more of, was to simply come together to practice.
It can be easy to forget the benefits of collective practice, perhaps especially since the Covid pandemic has tended to make many of us more isolated.
Practicing together, by doing meditation and shared ritual, can work against this sense of isolation.Shared more...

Urban Retreat Launch! | Effort and Effortlessness
Our Theme: Effort & Effortlessness
‘Effort’ is a word that can take some unpacking – especially in the Buddhist context. Many of us are drawn to Dharma-practice after years of ‘over-efforting’ in an unhelpful way in our lives which can leave us feeling depleted and worn out. Sinking into the ‘bliss of meditative absorption’ can be a strong draw, as is the image of the calmly seated Buddha. And the path to these ‘effortless’ states we’ve more...

Sangha Circle
Our tradition places great emphasis on building Sangha (a friendly community of individuals practising the Dharma, the Buddha’s teachings, alongside each other). Possibly because of the experience of the pandemic we may be noticing how we are by nature social creatures: We need each other to know ourselves. This is a safe and open space in which to be with others to bring kind attention to how we relate to others and just as importantly, ourselves.
For those who more...

Qi Gong – Going with the flow – Tim Mason & Satyalila
‘Qi Gong’ can be translated as ‘energy practice/skill/ effort’. So it can be directly connected to the theme of our retreat the 2022 Urban Retreat, ‘Effort & Effortlessness‘.
The core components of Qigong practices are the mind, the body, and the breath. By harnessing these three together, we can practice ‘right effort’, exercising our intention without trying too more...

The Heart of the Issue - Sangha Night
To “Be the revolution” we have to wake up into our life; know what is beneath our life choices and responses. This classic teaching image is said to be a mirror in which we can see ourselves.
